One of the areas that my students struggle with is reading comprehension. They were writing about character traits. They could discuss personification and compare and contrast stories. DeSoto (remember…EXEMPLAR units)…my class had knocked it out of the park. We took a district mandate and made it appropriate and engaging for our students.Īnd I’ll leave you with this….at the end of the IFL units on Brave Irene and Dr. And that is where the Read It Up series of creations was born. But I know my students are capable of anything as long as they have the necessary scaffolding and support. As we started planning for these IFL units, we realized the approach was less than engaging and we questioned the developmentally appropriateness of the activities and teaching methods. The units our district purchased were for Brave Irene and Dr. These literacy units are promoted as “exemplar” units for teaching literacy. Without sharing too many of personal opinions on this matter (read between the lines, ya’ll)….our district purchased ($$$$$$$$) something called an IFL Unit. Have you seen our Read It Up Creations? If not, I started creating these last year in response to a district mandate. ![]()

We also get a small glimpse into the author’s life as she incorporates the real-life bookstore that she owns into the book, and even names the owner in the book after herself. The characters are so real, they all but jump off the page. Not only is the narrative compelling and suspenseful, but the author also sprinkles in facts and details about the culture and history of the 7 tribes which make up the Anishinaabe. This book is a powerful snapshot of modern day life as an indigenous woman in a big city. He has no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures. Else, why should it be let so cheaply? And why have stood so long untenanted? John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage. A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house, and reach the height of romantic felicity - but that would be asking too much of fate! Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it. He falls hopelessly in love with Lorna, a girl he meets by accident, who turns out to be not only (apparently) the granddaughter of Sir Ensor Doone (lord of the Doones), but destined to marry (against her will) the impetuous, menacing, and now jealous heir of the Doone Valley, Carver Doone. ![]() Battling his desire for revenge, John also grows into a respectable farmer and takes good care of his mother and two sisters. John (in West Country dialect, pronounced "Jan") Ridd is the son of a respectable farmer who was murdered in cold blood by one of the notorious Doone clan, a once noble family, now outlaws, in the isolated Doone Valley. The additional goal then is to make the students find their own joy in reading to increase their motivation. (2001) argued that there should be intentional and ongoing active invitations to the students to respond and interact with the oral reading of story through interactive read-aloud. Johnston (2016) defined read-aloud as an instructional practice in which teachers or parents read text aloud to children incorporating pitch, tone, pace, volume changes, questions, and comments to produce fluent and engaging delivery. Reading aloud is both promoted in the family and at school for both first language and second language learners. The habit of reading as part of American culture begins at the family level. Trealease (2013) noted that nine-year-old American children interest in reading at that level is among the best in the world. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Mary poppins by pl travers![]() ![]() Instead, as Travers’ biographer puts it, Mary Poppins was “tart and sharp, rude, plain and vain.”ĭisney couldn’t have known that Travers was so protective of the character because she identified with her: “Mary Poppins is the story of my life,” she later told an interviewer. In contrast, the character in Travers books was definitely not cheerful. ![]() ![]() In the movie, the magical nanny played by Julie Andrews is a sweet, gentle, and cheerful lady. Travers’ biggest objection to the film was the way Disney portrayed Mary Poppins. Disney didn’t even invite her to the premier for fear she would make a scene. Her objections continued all through the production. Nor did she approve of the casting she suggested the male lead should not go to Dick Van Dyke, but to a British actor like Laurence Olivier or Richard Burton. She raised countless objections to the script, and even protested the use of the color red in the film. She heartily disliked the animated penguins. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Plato apology and crito![]() ![]() In the Charmides, Socrates discusses temperance and self-knowledge with Critias and Charmides at the fictional early date of the dialogue, Charmides is still a promising youth.
